Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
