A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
