2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
The news echoes a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full text from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having devoted the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most well-known series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist observing the development of the game in the months to follow.
The President

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an confirmed debut schedule or consoles, but players can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
